Album of the Day #1 - Buffalo Tom - "Big Red Letter Day"

Buffalo Tom - "Big Red Letter Day"

This album was released in 1993 and it’s for any fan of alternative rock or college radio rock of the 90’s. It has a straightforward sound like a mix of Bob Mould and The Lemonheads. Really simple song structures but really deep as well without any blistering guitar solos getting in the way. Rock that is straight to the point. Produced by the Robb Brothers who produced The Lemonheads “It’s A Shame about Ray.”

The band features two vocalists: Bill Janovitz and Chris Colbourn. Janovitz has a gravelly and gruffy kind of voice with a lot of power to it and it feels like it is coming right from his gut. Colbourn brings a quieter and softer side to the band.

Song to start out with: “Treehouse”

Why start out with this song?
- It’s a very simple song that has every music sensibility you could want.
-Some of my favorite lyrics: “You were made of wood - and cried ‘cause no one understood - but I had splinters in my fingers.”
- The song gives you a feel for Janovitz’ vocals.

Next song to try: “Late At Night”

Why try this one next?
- Displays Colbourn’s vocals.
- More sensitive and delicate song.
