Album of the Day #3 - Brite Futures - "Dark Past"

Brite Futures - “Dark Past”

This album is for any fan of indie pop music. A mix of loud dance music with thick luscious vocal hooks. Infectious high vocal notes as well as a mixture of different voice between the different singers in the band. Cool guitar grooves on a variety of the songs, My description of this band would be a mixture of OK Go and Walk the Moon.

Song to start out with: “Baby Rain”

Album of the Day #2 - The New Pornographers - "Twin Cinema"

The New Pornographers - “Twin Cinema”

This album came out in 2005 and it’s for any fan of indie rock or alternative rock. It features amazing instrumentation and great vocal harmonies. The group has two incredible singers that balance most of the vocal duties: A.C. Newman and Neko Case. Both singers have extremely unique voices. You may have heard of Neko Case’s solo work as she is an accomplished musician and has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards.

Two songs to check out:

“Sing Me Spanish Techno” - Features A.C. Newman on vocals (Has a silvery sound to his voice. Very clear and present, not forcing itself to the front of the mix.)

“The Bones of an Idol” - Features Neko Case on vocals (More soft-spoken singer but her voice couldn’t be stronger.)

Album of the Day #1 - Buffalo Tom - "Big Red Letter Day"

Buffalo Tom - "Big Red Letter Day"

This album was released in 1993 and it’s for any fan of alternative rock or college radio rock of the 90’s. It has a straightforward sound like a mix of Bob Mould and The Lemonheads. Really simple song structures but really deep as well without any blistering guitar solos getting in the way. Rock that is straight to the point. Produced by the Robb Brothers who produced The Lemonheads “It’s A Shame about Ray.”

The band features two vocalists: Bill Janovitz and Chris Colbourn. Janovitz has a gravelly and gruffy kind of voice with a lot of power to it and it feels like it is coming right from his gut. Colbourn brings a quieter and softer side to the band.

Song to start out with: “Treehouse”

Why start out with this song?
- It’s a very simple song that has every music sensibility you could want.
-Some of my favorite lyrics: “You were made of wood - and cried ‘cause no one understood - but I had splinters in my fingers.”
- The song gives you a feel for Janovitz’ vocals.

Next song to try: “Late At Night”

Why try this one next?
- Displays Colbourn’s vocals.
- More sensitive and delicate song.
